Governor Ige Signs Nine Bills to Provide Ocean Protection

On Tuesday, June 8, 2021 Governor David Ige signed nine bills passed by the Hawai‘i State Legislature into law that provide protection of the state’s aquatic resources.
In a statement Governor Ige said, “on this World Oceans Day, Hawai‘i again shows great leadership in grappling with the threats and challenges our precious marine environments face. I deeply appreciate the legislature’s support of these measures which collectively advance protection, management, and stewardship of ocean resources well into the future.”
The bills signed into law are as follows:
HB1016 (Commercial Marine Vessel Licenses, CMVL) – allows DLNR to issue a single CMVL for all persons aboard a vessel. [Rules and fees to be established by administrative rules]. ....

UH Hilo’s Hōkū Keʻa teaching telescope are the first two observatories to undertake the decommissioning process on
UH-managed Maunakea lands. The decommissioning of Hōkū Keʻa is anticipated to be completed in mid-to-late 2023. The
CSO deconstruction and site restoration work is tentatively scheduled to be completed by late 2022.
The 2010 Decommissioning Plan for the Maunakea Observatories, a sub-plan of the Maunakea Comprehensive Management Plan, describes the four-step decommissioning process for the removal of an observatory, followed by restoration of the site to its original state, to the greatest extent possible. ....

Researchers Undertake Invasive Species Monitoring

(AP) A state department has begun collecting special plates kept in several Hawaiʻi harbors as part of an effort aimed at detecting potential invasive species. Researchers from the state Department of Land and Natural Resources in recent weeks have begun collecting the plates, which the department said are anchored with cinder blocks in commercial harbors around the state. Hawaiʻi News Now reports the department says the plates soak in the water and different types of organisms settle on them. Researchers then look at the organisms as part of the effort to detect possible invasive species that may have been carried in on boats. ....

Law Enforcement Officers Sweep the Former Uncle Billy's Hilo Bay Hotel

On Wednesday, April 28, 2021, officers from the DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE), the Hawai‘i County Police Dept. and the State Dept. of Public Safety Sheriffs Division conducted a sweep of all 146 rooms at the former Uncle Billy’s Hilo Bay Hotel.
While the  officers did not find anyone on the property, there was evidence that many of the rooms had been recently occupied.  Officers found trash, clothing, and bedding scattered about as well as graffiti scrawled on doors and on both interior and exterior walls. The interior of the hotel is considered a public health hazard and people are cautioned to stay out. ....
