Robert Watt elevation 'a stroke of the highest order', claims Sinn Féin

Sinn Féin has claimed the appointment of Robert Watt as secretary general of the Department of Health would have “hallmarks of an old-fashioned stroke”.
Sinn Féin member of the Dáil’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) Matt Carthy made the remarks amid reports that Mr Watt’s appointment is expected to be ratified by Cabinet.
It is understood that an independent recruitment process carried out by the State’s Top Level Appointments Committee has ended. And it is expected that Mr Watt’s name will be forwarded to Government in the coming weeks. But it is considered unlikely the promotion will be confirmed at this week’s Cabinet meeting. ....

Community employment supervisors warn of strike ballot over access to pension scheme
Siptu sets mid-April deadline for Government to table proposals to resolve issue
Tue, Apr 6, 2021, 09:23

Community employment scheme supervisors are to ballot for strike action if the Government does not table proposals by the end of next week to deal with a long-running dispute over access to a pension scheme.
The move would mark the reactivation of industrial action which saw hundreds of community employment scheme supervisors stage a one-day strike in February 2020, just before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Services Industrial Professional and Technical Union (Siptu) said it had been informed by the Department of Social Protection in February 2021 that it had presented a consolidated proposal to the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform on the pension issue. ....

Sinn Féin accused of fixation on 'Trump-style hysteria' by Minister in housing row

Short-term measures
But the Minister for Housing said that refusing to use the private sector in housing “would be fighting with one hand tied behind our backs”.
Mr O’Brien stressed the need to “use short-term measures to boost [housing] supply while other supports such as direct State building of affordable homes comes on stream”.
Home ownership levels had fallen from 82 per cent in 1991 to 67.6 per cent, which is below the EU average, he said, adding that the proposed scheme would bridge the affordability gap in housing and create jobs as the economy recovers from the Covid-19 pandemic.
There was some conditional support for the scheme from a number of Independent TDs. Regional Independent Denis Naughten said the principle of the scheme “has merit” and should focus on assisting families in moving to regional towns and areas where there is a significant level of vacant housing. ....
