New footbridge installed at Canterbury East train station in £4.8 million upgrade

A new footbridge has been lowered into Canterbury East train station as part of a Â£4.8 million upgrade.
Crossing both platforms, the structure will house lifts either side - making access at the station step-free for the very first time.

Work has been carried over the past few weekends, and now the bridge is lowered into place along with a set of staircases.
The scheme hopes to make the station more accessible to passengers with mobility issues, as well as elderly people and parents with young children.
The project is planned to be fully complete by this July. ....

'They are too dangerous': Network Rail responds to plea for open access to crossing

Network Rail has responded to calls for a barrow crossing to be openly accessed at Ulverston Station.
Concerns have been raised by Furness Line Action Group (FLAG) member Robert Parker who believes the public should have free access to the crossing.
The crossing must be booked in advance and can only be used to cross the railway line when accompanied by a member of staff.
Network Rail spokesperson said: “Pedestrians crossing a live railway line is unsafe and barrow crossings are being phased out across the network because they are too dangerous.
“We’re drawing up designs exploring ways accessibility at Ulverston station can be transformed for passengers. These plans are the next step in bidding for future funding for lifts to be installed as part of the Department for Transport’s ‘Access for All’ scheme.” ....
