An investigation is underway in a Palm Desert area intersection following a shooting Thursday night. It happened around 10:45 p.m. in the area of Varner Road and Washington Street.

On July 15, 2021, at 10:36pm, Palm Desert Sheriff Station deputies responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon near the 78000 block of Varner Rd., Palm Desert. On arrival, deputies located an adult male laying in the roadway and determined he was the victim of a shooting. The victim was pronounced deceased on scene. Investigators from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Central Homicide Unit responded and assumed the investigation. The investigation is ongoing with no further information available at this time. The victim’s identity is being withheld pending next of kin notification.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department has released the 911 recording and bodycam footage of an officer-involved shooting that killed Royce Robertson, 33, of Joshua Tree on February 15. The shooting occurred around 7:30 a.m., just inside the gates of the Desert Horizons Country Club in Indian Wells. Prior to the shooting, a 911 call was made reporting that Robertson had pointed a handgun at and made threatening statements towards the driver of another vehicle, asking him, “Do you want to die today?” After the incident, Robertson fled the scene in his vehicle. When deputies attempted to pull Robertson over, he kept driving until he reached the entrance of the Desert Horizons Country Club and stopped his car just inside the gate. JURUPA VALLEY, CA — A man who died after his arrest Tuesday night in Jurupa Valley by sheriff's deputies has been identified.
The death of Ernie Serrano, 33, of Jurupa Valley came after an undisclosed use-of-force method was used on him.
According to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, deputies went to the 5500 block of Mission Boulevard around 8:30 p.m. regarding an assault with a deadly weapon call.

Serrano was at the location, fighting with a security guard and attempting to grab his gun, the department said.
While trying to detain Serrano, "he continued fighting with the deputies and did not comply with their commands. At that time, a use of force occurred," the sheriff's department reported.
