The Harbor Beach City Council started putting the final touches onto an ordinance amendment that would allow property to be used for a variety of uses at the site of the former Detroit Edison plant.
According to Harbor Beach Mayor Gary Booms, the site is zoned industrial, which would not allow perspective purchasers to use it for any other purpose. The tract of land, which includes several acres of lake-frontage, will be rezoned. After the rezoning, it could be divided and used for residential, recreational, commercial, or other purposes.

Harbor Beach athletic director Troy Schelke, left, and athletics secretary Pat Terrill demonstrate the COVID-19 testing process the school, along with all other Michigan high schools, have instituted since rules requiring testing of a prep athletes took effect earlier this month.
It’s been three weeks since new rules went into effect requiring high school athletes in the state of Michigan to undergo a weekly COVID-19 test to practice and compete for the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year, and area school districts have quickly adapted to the new policy.

Quarantine challenges prompt Harbor Beach high school to go remote

Quarantine challenges prompt Harbor Beach high school to go remote

Harbor Beach High School transitioned to remote learning March 16 due to multiple positive coronavirus cases.
"I have made the very difficult decision to move Harbor Beach High School to virtual classes beginning Tuesday," Superintendent Shawn Bishop said. "This is directly related to the number of COVID positive cases and related number of quarantines."
Bishop has been an outspoken proponent for in-person learning, but recently told the Tribune that due to the continuing teacher and substitute teacher shortages, quarantine situations compound staffing challenges. On Friday, the district learned of multiple positive COVID cases, which resulted in the health department quarantining large groups of students.

During the recent board of education meeting, Superintendent Shawn Bishop informed the board of the delinquent balances.
After some discussion, the board elected to have the school officials continue to reach out to these delinquent students to pay their outstanding balances. In the meantime, the district will transfer funds from the general fund to the food services account.
In addition, the board agreed to apply for a grant through the state's 31K Grant Reimbursement. The board will apply for funding to match the amount owed by students. Bishop later said the district will apply for the grant, but there is no guarantee it will be received.
