Dozens of Qantas passengers onboard a Launceston to Melbourne flight earlier this month are being urged to get tested and self-isolate after a vaccinated health care worker tested positive for COVID-19 shortly after his connecting flight to the UK.
In total, 61 passengers on Qantas flight QF1542 to Melbourne from Tasmania on 2 July are affected, after the man initially tested negative for COVID prior to boarding the flight.

The man spent around four hours in Melbourne before boarding his connecting flight to the UK via Singapore, flight SQ228. More than 72 hours after leaving Melbourne, the man returned a positive COVID-19 test.

Collaboration key to addressing health demand

Jeremy Rockliff,Minister for Health
I’d like to thank the clinicians and health representatives who joined the Health Secretary and I today to discuss ideas and solutions to address increasing demand on our health system.
Today was about listening to those around the table, because it is by taking a collaborative, solutions-based approach that we are best able to address the health challenges Tasmania is facing – something that is also being experienced Australia-wide.
It was a constructive meeting with a lot of goodwill in the room. I appreciated the frankness and willingness of those present to contribute ideas which largely aligned with strategies already being looked at or underway such as the streamlining of processes across our hospitals to create better patient flow, governance improvements, incentives to both attract and retain staff and exploring alternative pathways to care. We have committed to exploring any new ideas presented and continuing to keep the lines of communication open.

LGH commitment amounts to pretty pictures and big questions about funding

Tasmanian Labor
Without funding, Gutwein’s signature health commitment is wishful thinking
Rockliff needs to explain how he would staff any future development
Newly minted Health Minister Jeremy Rockliff must tell Tasmanians who will fund the much-touted $580 million redevelopment of the Launceston General Hospital and how he will staff additional health services.
Acting Labor Leader Anita Dow said while today’s release of the LGH masterplan was welcome as Tasmania’s health crisis continues to escalate, without a definitive answer on funding and future staffing, it amounted to little more than pretty pictures.
“Tasmanians who badly need new health services will be looking forward to Mr Rockliff and Premier Gutwein releasing comprehensive detail of how it will be funded,” Ms Dow said.

Holistic approach to mental health care vital

Jeremy Rockliff,Minister for Mental Health and Wellbeing
Mr Goddard’s latest report on mental health services contains factual inaccuracies.
I’m concerned that calculations around beds rely on the incorrect claim that beds were lost at the Peacock Centre when it burnt down.
In fact, the Peacock Centre provided community mental health support, it was not an inpatient facility, meaning Mr Goddard is using incorrect numbers to support his calculations.
The Tasmanian Liberal Government has a $216 million plan to continue our transformation of Tasmania’s mental health system, alcohol and drug treatment system and improve the health and wellbeing of Tasmanians.
