Big Bend National Park fire gains no ground as weather helps firefighters

The weather, with high humidity and low temperatures, helped crews keep the fire at just around 929 acres. It s now 35 percent contained, which mean fire crews have been able to encircle 35 percent of the fire to keep it from spreading further.
The fire sparked around 2 p.m. April 8 at a campground near the South Rim of the park. Fires continue to burn in lower Boot Canyon, Juniper Canyon, and the high ridges of Toll Mountain, according to the National Parks Service. ....

A fire that has burned for nearly a week at Big Bend National Park in southwest Texas has now grown to more than 800 acres. The National Park Service says more than 80 firefighters are battling the fire that continues to burn near the summit of Toll Mountain and lower Boot Canyon.
The National Park Service closed the Chisos Basin Campground and the Chisos Mountains Lodge out of an abundance of caution. Park staff assisted campers in finding alternative sites in the park.
The cause of the fire is unknown, but it is believed to have begun near a backcountry campsite. ....

A fire at Big Bend National Park that has burned for nearly a week has grown to at least 863 acres.
The National Park Service, which oversees the park in Far West Texas, said Monday that much of the fire is located in the “sky island” in the high Chisos Mountains.
The blaze has “left a patchy mosaic of scorched, burned, slightly singed, and untouched areas across the South Rim to Emory Peak, and into the lower Boot Canyon drainage,” officials said, adding that about two-thirds of the fire became stagnant after reaching rocky terrain or the edges of cliffs. ....

Although the wildfire at Big Bend National Park has spread to 929 acres, according to the National Parks Service Wednesday morning, about 35 percent of it has been contained. The Carson Hotshots, a firefighting crew from the Carson National Forest in New Mexico, arrived Monday night to help the other crews battling the blaze. The total number of firefighters working in the Chisos Mountains is now 88. Follow along with updates here.  ....
