Severe blood shortage prompts SEMC Blood Drive on July 2

Sleepy Eye Medical Center will host a community blood drive with the American Red Cross from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, July 2 at the Sleepy Eye Event Center. Donors are strongly urged to give to help ensure lifesaving blood products are available for patients. Hospital demand across the nation continues to outpace donations, and your help is vital. Donors will receive an exclusive Red Cross embroidered hat, while supplies last.
Appointments are required. To schedule an appointment, call the Red Cross at 1-800-733-2767 or visit www.redcrossblood.org and enter “56085” or “Sleepy Eye Event Center” as a drive location. Double reds will be accepted at this drive. Donors are required to wear a mask. ....

SEMC holds first vaccination clinic

Sleepy Eye Medical Center held its first COVID-19 vaccination clinic on Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Sleepy Eye Event Center, successfully administering first doses of the vaccine to 300 patients. In the days leading up to the event, these patients, ages 65 years of age and older, were randomly selected and notified that they were eligible to receive the vaccine.
“It truly was a special day for our patients who were able to receive the vaccine. This is our first step toward improving the lives of our patients by providing significant protection from COVID-19,” said Kevin Sellheim, SEMC Administrator.
According to Sellheim, this was SEMC’s first allotment of doses from the state. ....

Both Sleepy Eye Medical Center and Brown County Public Health are offering opportunities for the public to easily receive a flu shot.
BCPH said in their press release: Now, more than ever before, the flu vaccine is extremely important. The seasonal flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza (flu) viruses. The signs and symptoms of the seasonal flu are very similar to that of COVID-19 and they include a fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue.
Health officials are urging people to get the flu vaccine to lessen the symptoms. ....

Free drive-through flu vaccines will be available at the Brown County Human Services Building, 1117 Center Street,
from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19. Appointments are necessary and can be made by calling (507) 233-6820.
BROWN COUNTY The Minnesota Department of Health reported that Brown County had 30 new COVID-19 cases Thursday, bring the number of total cases to 1,760.
Brown County Public Health (BCPH) reported two additional deaths, bringing the county total to 21, 18 new laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases on Dec. 9 and 30 more on Dec. 10.
Cases ranged in age from teenagers to people in their 80s. ....
