A North Carolina man suspected of killing a fellow motorcycle club member who was described as being âlike a brotherâ to him was denied bond Tuesday in Stafford County General District Court.
George R. Batts, 39, of Richlands, N.C., is accused of killing 47-year-old Ely Grimes of Fredericksburg on Jan. 17 outside 1130 International Parkway off U.S. 17 in southern Stafford. Both men were members of the Tuckahoe Motorcycle Club and were in Stafford that weekend attending an event for the club.
Grimes was shot three times in the chest for reasons that have not come out in court hearings or records. He died a few days later in a local hospital. ....

Shooting that killed man outside motorcycle club ruled justified
The investigation into the officer-involved shooting which occurred on January 17 at 1130 International Parkway has been completed.
The investigation was conducted by detectives with the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division. The completed investigation was subsequently turned over to the Stafford County Commonwealth’s Attorney for review. The Commonwealth’s Attorney was provided all the evidence collected, including witness statements, forensic evidence, and audio and video recordings.
Commonwealth’s Attorney Eric L. Olsen announced today their Office has determined the shooting of the suspect by the deputies was justified in self-defense and/or in defense of others. ....

STAFFORD, Va. (AP) Virginia sheriff’s deputies who shot and wounded a murder suspect were justified in using deadly force, authorities have determined.
The head prosecutor for Stafford County said Friday that the action by the deputies were justified and that they will return to regular duty.
George R. Batts Jr., 38, of Richlands, North Carolina, was shot last Sunday morning by deputies who responded to a shooting at 1130 International Parkway in Stafford.
Batts is accused of fatally shooting Ely Grimes, 47, before the deputies arrived.
According to investigators, Batts and Grimes were attending an event for the Tuckahoe Motorcycle Club. The group has a clubhouse in the business park where the shooting occurred. ....

FREDERICKSBURG, VA A 38-year-old North Carolina man who was involved in a shooting at the Tuckahoe Motorcycle Club on Sunday is now facing murder charges after a 47-year-old Fredericksburg man that police said he shot in the chest has died at a local hospital, Stafford County Sheriff s Office officials said Thursday.
Police said that Ely Grimes died from his injuries and that George R. Batts, Richlands, N.C., has been charged in Grimes death. Batts was shot at by deputies after police say he pointed a gun at officers after being told repeatedly to drop his weapon, police said earlier this week. ....
