Soweto Paddlers Celebrate Freedom Day with a Paddle Around Robben Island | The Home Of Great South African News

Dusi Canoe Marathon stars Loveday Zondi and Siseko Ntondini from Soweto celebrated Freedom Day with a historic paddle around Robben Island on Tuesday.
Zondi and Siseko Ntondini were joined by Simnikiwe Ntondini and ADreach founder, Brad Fisher, in a celebratory surfski race around the historic island, in honour of one of the greatest icons and leaders that South Africa and the world has known, former President Nelson Mandela.

The four paddlers took on the 27km race in pairs, as the race was officially a doubles race, from the Oceana Powerboat Club at the Cape Town Waterfront, around Robben Island and back. Incidentally, the number 27 is symbolic as South Africa celebrates 27 years of Freedom, and Mandela spent 27 years in prison, many of those on Robben Island. ....

Are We Still Two Nations – The Dusi Canoe Marathon Informs – The Home Of Great South African News

By Steuart Pennington
In 1998, 22 years ago, our then Deputy President, Thabo Mbeki in opening of the debate on nation-building commented “This reality is South Africa comprises two nations, underwritten by the perpetuation of the racial, gender and spatial disparities born of a very long period of colonial and apartheid white minority domination, constitutes the material base which reinforces the notion that, indeed, we are not one nation, but two nations.
And neither are we becoming one nation. Consequently, also, the objective of national reconciliation is not being realised.”

I have just spent a number of days waking at 05h00 to get my daughter and her paddling partner to qualifying races for the Dusi Canoe Marathon scheduled for the 18 to 20 March. I love it. We drive deep into the bowels of the Valley of 1000 Hills down narrow roads, avoiding wandering Nguni cattle, dodging the ubiquitous taxis and being greeting by local residents. The hillsi ....

The many meanings of water: The elements in Thobani K's photography

The many meanings of water: The elements in Thobani K’s photography
13 Feb 2021
Thobani K’s first portrait, an image of his grandfather Bhekindaba Killiam Cele, sets out his modus operandi.
In the 1980s in the then KwaZulu homelands, the areas of KwaNgcolosi, Emaphephetheni and EmaQadini (Eskebheni) were flooded when the Inanda Dam overflowed, disrupting the lives of residents, many of whom lost their homes and small businesses.
One local businesswoman, who owned the Umngeni Drift Store, had a paddle boat which she used to assist locals to cross the Umngeni River to the Ngcolosi area near Molweni. Because of this crucial boat, the Umngeni Drift Store was referred to by the people as Eskebheni (“by the boat”), and even Dusi Canoe Marathon participants used to camp in the store’s yard.  ....
