KEY ACTION After an executive session, the board took action on several pay increases with public school employees.
DISCUSSION: The board approved a two- year contract with the Ohio Association of Public-School employees, effective July 31, 2021 to June, 30, 2023. Also, approved were pay increases for the Central Office staff and longevity pay for 15-19 years of service $835 in 2022 and $852 in 2023; longevity pay for 20 plus years of service $1,306 in 2022 and $1,332 in 2023.
Pay increases were approved for non-certified administration staff in accordance with classified negotiated contracts, buildings and grounds coordinator, and transportation coordinator for 2022-23.
The board also approved Superintendent Dr. James Miller and Treasurer Sheryl Hardesty to proceed with obtaining mechanical/engineering specification architectural drawing/rendering (if needed), and cost estimates for improvements to air quality, heating ventilation, and air cond ....

Voters approve all tax levies on ballot in Tuscarawas County
NEW PHILADELPHIA All tax issues on the May primary ballot in Tuscarawas County were approved by voters on Tuesday, including a 1% income tax increase in Midvale and a 2.5-mill additional levy for fire protection and EMS in Franklin Township, according to unofficial totals from the Tuscarawas County Board of Elections.
Results include:
• 4-mill renewal levy for police and fire in Dover 684 for the levy, 190 against the levy;
• 2.8-mill renewal levy for current expenses in Uhrichsville 105 in favor, 51 against;
• 1% income tax increase in Midvale 27 in favor, 18 against;
• 1.6-mill renewal levy for general operating expenses in Parral 18 in favor, 0 against; ....

County officials consider moving board of elections office

No decision has been made.
Commissioners held a meeting last week with members of the board of elections to discuss the situation.
It s just an advisory thing and to just share information back and forth to what their thoughts were, said Commissioner Al Landis.
One motivation for the discussions was the 2020 presidential election. During that election, nearly 75% of Tuscarawas County residents voted either by mail or in person - the highest turnout in county history.
Large numbers of people voted early at the board office at the courthouse. The room for early voting is small and can accommodate only two voting machines. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, the machines had to be sanitized after each person voted. That slowed down the process. ....

Election officials forecast light turnout for May 4 primary

Early voting begins Tuesday in Tuscarawas County for the May 4 primary. Residents wishing to cast ballots in-person can go to the Tuscarawas County Board of Elections office on the ground floor of the courthouse in New Philadelphia. They should use the S. Broadway entrance to the building. A canopy has been set up to shelter voters waiting in line outside.
Early voting hours include:
April 12-16: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
April 19-23: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
April 26-30: 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
May 1: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
May 2: 1 to 5 p.m.
May 3: 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. ....

Civic leader, educator John Zion dies at age 92

The New Philadelphia resident died Monday, March 8, in Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital in Dover.
Retired Tuscarawas County Court of Common Pleas Judge Roger Lile had Zion as his English teacher his sophomore year.
“He’d also talk about history, so he provided a good foundation for when I went to college,” said Lile, who now resides in Dover.
“He was always fun to be around and just a pleasant, easy-going person,” Lile said. “I think that he really lived a long time because he didn’t get excited and upset about something he couldn’t take care of doing. He was great as one of our three county commissioners we worked with during the annual budget process, and later the renovations to the courthouse. It really made much nicer conditions for the jury. My courtroom had been the law library for years before being converted into Courtroom No. 2.” ....
