Pandemic expected to exacerbate financial struggles for working families in St. Joseph County


Reversing a recent positive trend, more St. Joseph County households were struggling financially in 2019, and the pandemic has likely worsened things for even more people, according to a new analysis by University of Notre Dame researchers.
The federal government-determined poverty level, $26,500 annual income for a family of four, has long been the standard by which poverty is measured in the United States. But in recent years, the United Way has also been counting the “working poor,” those whose work at one or more jobs pushes their income over the poverty line but below what it takes to pay bills and some debt while saving for the future. ....

Coming next year: United Way brings child care, health services to southeast South Bend


SOUTH BEND — The United Way of St. Joseph County hopes to break ground this spring on the Southeast Neighborhood Center that would fill a vacant block at Dubail and Fellows streets, at least half of which would provide high-quality child care for up to 112 kids.
As announced two years ago, it aims to reach low-income and under-served residents, including space for health services and youth and senior programs, too.
The fundraising campaign for the center has raised almost 93% of the $4.2 million that’s needed — an amount that could fluctuate with the costs of materials during the pandemic, said Lauren Smyth, the United Way’s vice president of advancement. ....
