Plum Island 'closer than ever' to being saved as federal spending bill would block sale

After more than a decade of uncertainty, the mandated sale of Plum Island may be off the table as part of a federal spending bill that could be approved this week.
U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced Wednesday that a provision in the 2021 federal spending bill will permanently block the sale until local entities decide what the 840-acre island’s fate should be.
In a press release, Mr. Schumer said the spending bill includes $18.9 million for cleaning up the island, which will remain under federal ownership through the Department of Homeland Security.
“We’re closer than ever before to saving Plum Island.” ....

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A young man accused in a series of San Diego-area gang-related killings and attempted slayings pleaded not guilty Monday to murder, attempted murder and conspiracy charges.
Ismael Betancourt, 20, is charged in the Aug. 1, 2019, shooting death of 57-year-old Marco Magana in Mountain View, the Feb. 8 shooting death of 19-year-old Leah Posey in Southcrest, and two attempted murders that allegedly occurred on July 24, 2019 and Feb. 8.
San Diego police announced Betancourt s arrest last month in connection with the April 8, 2018, shooting death of 55-year-old Lowry Rivers in National City, which occurred when Betancourt was 17. Rivers killing is not listed in the latest complaint, and it s unclear whether Betancourt is being tried in juvenile court regarding that crime or whether additional char ....

Requests for reapplying red paint on pinkish-hued, faded curbs are a common request. When motorists park within red curbed areas, their parked vehicles, especially RVs and cargo trucks, block other drivers vantage points as they advance into incoming traffic.
Other San Diegans are requesting the exact opposite.
This curb is painted red, explained a La Jolla dweller on the city s app on December 14, presumably by the homeowner, who has also written in white over the illegal red paint, don t ever park here, repeatedly. The red curb is not near the intersection with Marine Street, so there is no turning radius impact. The distance between driveway aprons, where the curb is painted, is 70 feet in length; the illegal red curb with the white lettering is less than that. ....

Elizabeth “Betty” D. Casey of Peconic Landing in Greenport died on Dec 8, 2020. She was 95 years old.
Born in Marlborough, Mass., Betty was raised and attended schools on Long Island. She worked for 13 years in the public relations department of AT&T in downtown Manhattan, where she was associate editor of the company magazine.
After marriage in 1952, she and her husband, Robert, settled in Garden City, where they lived and raised their family for 33 years. In the ’70s she owned and operated a small printing and mailing business in Garden City.
Following her husband’s retirement in 1988, they moved to Southold when Bob retired. Betty was a member of the St. Patrick R.C. Church Rosary Altar Society and was a volunteer at Eastern Long Island Hospital. ....
