Expressing concern about how a proposed new nail salon might impact parking near Love Lane, the Southold Town Planning Board is requiring the property owner to undergo a site plan review.
The nail salon has been proposed at the former site of Bauer’s Love Lane Shoppe, in a building with four other storefronts.
At issue is the impact the change of use from a gift shop to a nail salon might have on parking along Love Lane and in neighboring municipal lots. ....

Neighbors: Southold Indian Museum proposal would contribute light pollution

Members of the Custer Institute are opposing plans for the installation of exterior lights at the neighboring Southold Indian Museum, saying it would interfere with the stargazing experience at their observatory.
The museum, which celebrates Native American history and was founded on Main Bayview Road in 1962, has proposed a new front entryway with an ADA-compliant lift and the addition of 14 parking spots. As proposed, the alterations would include four new lights on the building and two more in the parking lot. Indian Museum president Lucinda Hemmick said the lights could be timed to be in use only as needed. ....

Environmental review to begin for expansion at Strong's Yacht Center

An environmental review of a controversial boatyard expansion in Mattituck may soon get underway.
At a meeting Monday, the Southold Town Planning Board approved the final scope, a document required as part of the State Environmental Quality Review Act that spells out what aspects of the project must be further studied before it’s approved or denied.
The board voted 4-0 to accept the final scope, with chairman Donald Wilcenski recused.
“This is a major project,” Planning Board vice chair James Rich said during Monday’s meeting, adding that he thought the final document, which is nearly 30 pages long, is “very complete.” ....

Neighbors once again took to a virtual hearing to express their concerns about a proposal for two boat storage buildings at Strong’s Yacht Center by the Old Mill in Mattituck. Among the detractors is a local environmental group.
Louise Harrison, New York Natural Areas Coordinator for Save the Sound, highlighted the organization’s top concerns during Monday’s hearing, urging the Planning Board to consider scale, forest and soil removal, potential for slope failure and impacts to the nearby Mill Road town preserve. ....
