Following Hurricane Charley in 2004, an endowment fund was established with the Southwest Florida Community Foundation to provide scholarships for dependents of city of Sanibel employees. This year, there are multiple sources contributing to the Employee Dependent Scholarship Program: the Charitable Foundation of the Islands, Southwest Florida Community Foundation endowment and Sanibel-Captiva Kiwanis Club, as well as proceeds from various city vending machines. ....

Women’s History Month is a celebration of the achievements of groundbreaking women everywhere and a time to examine the many obstacles they still face. That examination is especially important now, as the pandemic amplifies gender inequalities in Southwest Florida that have existed for generations. In our region, where women now outnumber men, studies show women earn even less money than the national average. Likewise, women have fewer professional or management positions and less health insurance coverage than Florida’s average, which is already among the worst in the nation.
According to U.S. Census Bureau data, there are more Southwest Florida women in poverty than men. Looking at the higher end of the economic spectrum, women with graduate degrees in Lee County still earn an average of 19% less than their male counterparts, while the earnings difference in Collier County is 39%. ....

Fourth Generation Dunbar Resident Opening Wellness Pharmacy

Dr. Shadreka McIntosh grew up in the Dunbar community in Fort Myers. The fourth generation resident went to Fort Myers High School before getting a master of science in integrative medicine from George Washington University, and a doctor of pharmacy degree from Florida A&M University. She’s spent the past five years as a pharmacist at the Veterans Affairs clinic in Cape Coral, but has dreamed of opening a pharmacy of her own in the community she grew up in. And now it’s becoming a reality thanks to a $270,000 dollar investment from the Southwest Florida Community Foundation, in collaboration with Catalyst Community Capital, Inc. This is the first impact investment from the Community Foundation’s new revolving loan fund. Money that is repaid from these investments or loans is recycled to help other nonprofit and for-profit social entrepreneurs. ....
