Egremont residents face choice between banning, regulating cannabis


EGREMONT — Last week s town election moved Egremont closer to banning several cannabis licenses, but that campaign has another hurdle to clear at the June 8 town meeting.
While the Planning Board has drafted a bylaw to regulate cannabis businesses, a vocal group of residents is advocating for the bans, which would go further than the bylaw and effectively prevent additional marijuana retail stores from opening in Egremont. It would also ban cultivator, product manufacturer, craft cooperative, delivery operator and transporter licenses in the town.
The six citizens petitions put forth by Egremont Together each received around 60 percent support at the election, but they still need majority approval at the town meeting to take effect. ....

Egremont voters approve cannabis license bans, pending town meeting vote


EGREMONT — Voters opted to ban several cannabis licenses in Egremont, although those proposals still need to garner majority support at next month’s town meeting to take effect.
The six cannabis-related ballot questions effectively would prevent any additional retail stores from opening other than the locally owned Devine Berkshires, which already has been approved, and prohibit cultivator, product manufacturer, craft cooperative, delivery operator and transporter licenses in the town.
Residents voted 148-93 on Tuesday to limit retail, 144-97 to prohibit cultivators, 150-93 to prohibit product manufacturers, 145-96 to prohibit craft cooperatives, 139-100 to prohibit delivery operators and 144-95 to prohibit transporters, Town Clerk Juliette Haas said in an email. ....

No contested races, but Egremont voters mull cannabis-related ballot questions


EGREMONT — There are no contested races on the ballot at Egremont’s town election Tuesday, but six ballot questions will have voters weigh in on whether to ban a range of cannabis licenses.
Voters can cast ballots from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Town Hall, 171 Egremont Plain Rd.
Candidates for reelection are Francine Beth Groener (assessor), Stephen L. Cohen (moderator), Mary Ann Brazie (selectman), John Wells (cemetery commissioner), Juliette S. Haas (town clerk), Margaret A. Muskrat (library trustee) and James M. Olmsted (tree warden). Stephen Kirk Lyle is also running for a five-year seat on the Planning Board. ....

'In battle with no armor' as Egremont rushes to pass cannabis bylaws


EGREMONT — If you are a marijuana outfit looking to cash in on this little state border town before its cannabis bylaws hit the books, think again.
A flock of residents now is armed with a lawyer, waiting. And yes, this is a town in which most residents voted “yes” on the state referendum in 2016 to legalize recreational marijuana.
So, what’s the problem?
“It was not to make a zoning change to just allow this industry to come in and take over our town,” Rick Ramsay said of that ballot referendum. He says he is speaking for a growing number of residents in this town on the New York state and Connecticut borders who don’t want to see a change of “character” in a town that has “a strong local culture,” as one town official put it. ....
