Cllr Lian Pate A COUNCIL is to spend an extra £20,000 from its Covid-19 Community Recovery Fund on a health and fitness initative. Burnley Council s executive approved the move of the cash to its Beat the Street Project at its April meeting. Health and wellbeing boss Cllr Lian Pate said: Beat the Street is an innovative means to encourage more people to become active. Maintaining an active lifestyle and a healthy weight is one of the key ways of reducing the adverse impacts of Covid-19 as well as protecting against many other illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease and depression.

Lionhearts Inc. Street Project program surpasses 250K meals served
The Street Project program implemented by Lionhearts Inc. has been serving hot take-home meals since March 2020. On April 16, 2021, the program passed 250,000 meals served since its inception.
Volunteers with Lionhearts Inc. serve more than just a take-out box with a tasty meal. Daily offerings include snacks, fruit, pastries and fresh bread, hot chocolate, warm clothing, personal toiletries, fresh socks, and towels. The program has been integral for those in need during the pandemic, and has seen continued growth of the community it serves.
“At Lionhearts, we have seen many incredible people help keep our meals-to-go program alive,” said Travis Blackmore, executive director. “Between our financial supporters, our team of chefs, and our teams who serve these meals seven nights a week, we have seen the vulnerable in our community be fed nutritious meals during a long season of unknowns and difficulty.”
Main Street Project s COVID-19 isolation spaces or Alternative Isolation Accommodation (AIA) were set up in only five days. All 39 suites were furnished by donation.
In a social media post, the organization said more than 11,000 meals have been provided to those who have used the units in the past year, with half of referrals for the space coming from community sites, 40 per cent from hospitals and 10 per cent from community health centres.

Main Street Project estimates about 90 per cent of clients have received harm reduction and substance use support, as well as withdrawal management and mental health supports while they were in isolation.
