SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. While COVID-19 has devastated many Native American tribes across the country, killing older American Indians at alarmingly high rates, local tribes in San Diego County have had their resilience put to the test in other ways during the pandemic.
Many lives are being lost, especially our cultural keepers and our elders, said Dr. Joely Proudfit, chair of the American Indian Studies Department at Cal State San Marcos. The cultural knowledge that they bring to the community: that is irreplaceable. ....

'Educators are ready.' Alpine teachers are among first in San Diego County to get vaccinated

Last March, Boulder Oaks Elementary School teacher Nikki Woodward hugged her third-graders good-bye for the last time as schools nationwide shut down and the pandemic took over life in America.
On Wednesday afternoon, 313 days after the pandemic began, Woodward received her first COVID-19 vaccine, becoming one of the first teachers in San Diego County to get a vaccine.
Her school district, the small, rural Alpine Union in East County, is able to get teachers and all school staff vaccinated through its partnership with local tribes located in Alpine who opened vaccinations to school staff before the rest of San Diego County. ....

Jamul Indian Village donates $75K for health needs

The Jamul Indian Village of California donated $75,000 at the end of 2020 to regional health care agencies in the battle against the pandemic.
The tribe’s donations include $45,000 to Sharp Grossmont Hospital, $15,000 to Southern Indian Health Council and $15,000 to Indian Health Council, Inc.
“The tribe wanted to give back to those who have been impacted by COVID-19,” said JIV Chairwoman Erica Pinto. “We are donating these funds to honor the courage and resilience of our front-line health care workers and to support the children and families who are suffering as a result of the pandemic. We are truly grateful for the extraordinary and tireless efforts of each of these organizations and their workers.” ....
