Carbondale NAACP rep. says Chauvin 'guilty' verdict brings hope

(WSIL) Nancy Maxwell, criminal justice chair of the Carbondale NAACP, had tears in her eyes as the judge read the guilty verdict in the trial of Derek Chauvin early Tuesday afternoon.
But she wiped away the tears and thought, It s just one case. That fact lingered in Maxwell s mind as celebrations unfolded across the country. One victory today but more fights tomorrow.
This is a good victory but it s a first step, Maxwell said. We still got a huge fight ahead of us.
Chauvin, a former Minneapolis Police officer, was found guilty of second degree murder, third degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in the May 2020 death of George Floyd. ....

Zoom Conversation With Local Officials On Policing Planned

National conversations about policing and justice reform are prompting a virtual event this week for southern Illinois.
The Zoom discussion will feature Jackson County State’s Attorney Joe Cervantes and Carbondale Interim Police Chief Stan Reno. Reno said the goal is to have conversation about community concerns.
“It’s really just an opportunity to have an open forum with community members, for them to ask questions about things happening in the community, what’s happening the police department,” he explained. “An opportunity for me and the state’s attorney to talk about some of the initiatives and efforts we’re working on for community outreach and really just have an open opportunity for people to talk to us.” ....

(WSIL) The Southern Illinois Unity Coalition hit the road to start the holiday weekend with an MLK Love Train.
Around two dozen vehicles made their way from Harrisburg to Murphysboro, stopping at Marion s Ray Fosse Park along the way.
Coordinator Nancy Maxwell says Saturday s event is about bringing Love -and- Unity to the 618.
Since the George Floyd protest the group, which goes by the shortened name SO. ILL Unity Coalition, has been working to gain more awareness on social injustice.
We want to continue this movement, keep people aware, says Maxwell who is the Community Grassroots Director. So that one day, maybe not me will see it in my lifetime, but maybe my child will have an equal opportunity to walk down the street, lay in a bed, play in a park without worrying about being shot. ....

Nancy Maxwell Wins 'Neighborly' Award for Fighting Rape, Domestic Violence and Social Injustice

Carbondale, IL – Nancy Maxwell has been both a rape crisis medical/legal advocate and rape crisis counselor at The Women’s Center for almost 10 years. She ran the women’s empowerment group at the Eurma Hayes Center in Carbondale for many years with few resources. Nancy has been fighting for social justice and spearheading the anti-rape movement for over a decade in Southern Illinois.
WSIU Public Broadcasting, a service of Southern Illinois University Carbondale, is pleased to announce Nancy Maxwell as a recipient of the ‘Neighborly’ award in the individual category. WSIU received four separate nominations from her coworkers at The Women’s Center. ....
