Health officials stress importance of COVID-19 vaccine second dose

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - Officials with the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control said that as of Friday, South Carolina has received a little over 542,000 doses of the vaccine.
Officials said about 246,000 have been administered, and nearly 300,000 appointments are scheduled in the coming weeks. However, as appointments are getting booked up for the coming weeks to months, getting an appointment for the second dose is proving difficult for some in South Carolina.
DHEC’s Interim Director Dr. Brannon Traxler said if you’re having difficulty getting an appointment, contact your provider that you got your first dose from. She stressed that it’s critical for everyone to get that second dose to have optimal protection from COVID-19. She said one dose potentially gives partial immunity, but ....

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - Wednesday, South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control leaders worked to dispel the idea South Carolina is receiving fewer doses per capita than its neighbors.
As of Wednesday,
CDC data shows South Carolina is ranked last in the nation with doses distributed from the federal government per 100,000 people.
In response to rising concerns over the issue, state legislators sent a letter to Sen. Lindsey Graham in the past week.

South Carolina grappling with most COVID-19 deaths per week since pandemic began

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - South Carolina’s death toll is climbing to tragic new heights.
The previous record was 325 deaths, counted the week of July 25.
Between the weeks ending on Dec. 26 through Jan. 16, DHEC has tallied 1,160. That’s the deadliest four week span of the pandemic.
As of Jan. 17, DHEC reports the state’s death toll from the virus stands at 6,248.
