Preservation Foundation adds butterfly friendly natives at police station

The large garden boxes that sit outside the Palm Beach Police Department on South County Road will soon bloom with a variety of new environmentally friendly plants.
The project is headed by the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach. The first phase includes removing the existing palm trees from the 18-foot beds, which was done earlier this week by landscape company Total Maintenance Environmental Services. 
The foundation will donate the native plants that will replace the palm trees sometime next week, Director of Horticulture Susan Lerner told the Daily News.
Lerner said the landscape design for the boxes is still evolving because the beds are much deeper than what she and the town s grounds maintenance supervisor, John Lawrence, originally thought. ....

'Speaking to the demand': In Berkshires, sales of high-end homes soar during first quarter


PITTSFIELD — The Berkshire economy still is recovering from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, but those lingering symptoms haven’t affected the county’s luxury home market.
The sales of $1 million-plus single-family homes in the Berkshires, which began to heat up last year, continued during the first quarter of 2021. Fifteen such homes were sold by Realtors in the Berkshires during the first quarter, which ended April 20, the highest total for that time period since the Berkshire County Board of Realtors began tracking those statistics in 1997, according to Sandra J. Carroll, the board’s president and CEO.
The board tracks only Realtor-assisted transactions. ....

LISBON – In county Municipal Court, a jury on Wednesday found Jack O. Colon, 60, Longs Crossing Road, Leetonia, guilty of aggravated menacing for threats made in front court employees at Common Pleas Court in January.
The threats were directed toward the clerks and prosecutor’s office after they refused to accept Colon’s paperwork charging Governor Mike DeWine with treason in the clerk’s office. Colon additionally threatened to hang the governor, members of the clerk of courts, members of the prosecutor’s office and school district employees who make children wear masks.
Colon was credited with 111 days served toward a 180-day sentence imposed by Judge Timothy McNicol following the guilty verdict. The remaining 69 days have been suspended. He was released pending his indication he plans to appeal the conviction and ordered to have no further contact with those working in the Columbiana County Clerk of Court’s office on the third floor of the co ....

Investigators of a February house fire in Kokomo that killed three young siblings could not determine a cause of the fire but said they  cannot rule out the possibility one of the children started the blaze in an upstairs bedroom.
A human element likely played a role in the Feb. 27 house fire in the 13000 block of South County Road 300 East in Miami County that killed Miracle Gingerich, 6, Steven Gingerich, 5, and Wilma Gingerich, 1, according to Miami County Sheriff s Sgt. Gary Glassburn.
Investigators found no evidence that faulty equipment or other ignition sources like wiring, outlets or a power strip started the fire and noted interviews with family members revealed one of the children had previously set fires in the house. ....
