School of Rock: Rolling Stone's $15K scholarship for teen

A Northern Rivers university student who saved up bought his genuine Fender Telecaster guitar when he was 12 has been awarded the inaugural Rolling Stone sponsored scholarship.
Southern Cross University Bachelor of Contemporary Music student Leon Holstegge, 19, is the recipient of the scholarship which will give him a total of $15,000 to help with his studies and align him with the internationally-acclaimed publication.
In the second year of his degree, Mr Holstegge said he couldn’t believe his luck.
“I was scrolling through Facebook and saw the link for the Rolling Stone Scholarship and thought ‘this could be nice’ and then just went for it,” he said. ....

Southern Cross University graduate Matthew Collins spent most of 2020 making music from home to supplement his income after his band’s international tour was cancelled due to COVID restrictions.
As frontman of indie-rock band WHARVES, Matthew said 2019 had been epic, supporting DZ Deathrays for a 14-show of Europe, followed by a headline Australian tour. The band couldn’t have foreseen what 2020 would hold.
“In March last year we saw our Australian and United Kingdom tour disappear in the blink of an eye due to COVID, and it was pretty confronting having to think about life without it as performing is a really big part of who I am and who we are as a band,” Matthew said. ....

After numerous trips to the highlands of Papua New Guinea, one Southern Cross University Lismore campus student believes his research into beekeeping can make a positive difference to some of the world’s poorest people.
Four ceremonies were being held over Friday and Saturday, with Dr Cooper Schouten, 28, to join more than 700 fellow graduands to receive their testamurs and have their degrees conferred at the Gold Coast Convention Centre.
On Saturday Dr Schouten will give will give the graduate address on behalf of all students.
“One of the key things I will mention is while it’s great to have all your hard work and efforts recognised, I’ll want to thank all of our families, friends and colleagues for their love and support during our studies at Southern Cross University,” he said. ....

One researcher's plan to bring more logs to Lismore

In an effort to bring more logs to Lismore, a local PhD researcher is looking at whether a timber industry could be re-established in the Northern Rivers.
Kevin Glencross is a PhD researcher at Southern Cross University who also project manages, designs and supervises large-scale forest restoration operations for the public, for private enterprise, NGOs including the United Nations.
My PhD research looked at ways we could put trees back into the landscape, and also look at them as a potential resource. Could we re-establish a timber industry and do a much better job this time around? he said. ....
