Island mountain biking group looking for volunteers for BC Trail Day

VICTORIA
This Saturday is BC Trail Day and Victoria s South Island Mountain Bike Society (SIMBS) is hoping to mark the occasion by maintaining popular trails for the benefit of all local riders.
To celebrate, the local organization is looking for volunteers to help with trial building and maintenance work at the Hartland mountain bike park on Sunday.
Work will include trail grading, restoration and remediation along with collecting garbage that blows onto the trails from the Hartland dump.
BC Trail Day is a province-wide initiative dedicated to celebrating and caring for B.C.’s trail systems, educating about responsible recreation and helping more British Columbians enjoy trails and outdoor spaces. ....

CRD backs upgrades for mountain bike trails, possible expansion; some park users angered

After dozens of speakers and an hour of debate, CRD directors recognized the changing user base in regional parks and approved the new guidelines as a balance, with some suggesting that future parkland acquisitions should be considered with mountain biking in mind.
The new guidelines were developed by the CRD’s parks committee after extensive consultations with mountain bikers and concerned park users.
“This sets out terms of reference on how to integrate mountain biking in existing park systems as [the sport] expands in the region,” said parks committee chair Rebecca Mersereau. “Our parks are acquired and managed for the primary purpose of ecological protection. We can’t just flip a switch.” ....

Last summer, dozens of children in East Vancouver started building jumps and other features in a local park. At the time, after some back-and-forth, the city said the jumps could stay. This week, for some reason, the jumps have repeatedly been knocked down and the kids keep rebuilding them in a game of cat and mouse with city officials.
Many sanctioned bike parks have been the result of battles like this. We hope that all parties involved can come to an agreement and that, one way or another, the kids end up with some jumps. ....

Debate heats up over mountain biking in CRD parks

Mountain bikers highlighted the health benefits of their booming sport and the need to accommodate a growing number of recruits. They warned that people would continue to build illegal or “rogue” trails in the parks unless the CRD provides more sanctioned ones.
Conservationists, including many who fought to protect the district’s wilderness areas, voiced outrage at the environmental damage caused by bikers and urged the CRD to put the brakes on mountain biking in sensitive ecosystems. Some called for more enforcement and others for an outright ban on biking in certain areas.
Neither side seemed particularly happy with the district’s proposed mountain biking guidelines, which aim to “provide a transparent process for identifying the most appropriate mountain biking areas within regional parks,” a staff report says ....

Committee says no to more parking fees for CRD parks

“You don’t make such change to our parks without consulting our public.”
He said parking rates of $2.25 per day or $20 per season will climb to “punitive” rates of $7 a day and $60 a season by 2023 under the system presented to the committee.
Screech said the current rates are affordable. “And possibly I can get behind that sort of an amount, but when you look at $7, in two years, for a family to go to Thetis or any number of the parks for $60 a season, that’s a whole different amount,” he said. “For low-income families, it’s a huge amount of money.” ....
