In a ruling dated June 4, Chief Magistrate Judge, Ronald E. Bush, in Boise federal court determined that a suction dredge miner polluted the South Fork of the Clearwater River and needed a permit as required under the Clean Water Act.
The Idaho Conservation League, represented by Advocates for the West, filed the lawsuit against Shannon Poe of California regarding his 42 days of suction dredge mining on the Idaho river.
Judge Bush ruled against each of the arguments Poe’s lawyers put before him. His ruling confirms that suction dredge mining requires permits under the Clean Water Act, and that the removal, processing, and disposal of material sucked from the bottom of rivers and streams with motorized equipment constitute a “discharge.” ....

Hikers and dog rescued along South Fork Clearwater

Two hikers and a dog were rescued Tuesday night after becoming stranded along the banks of the South Fork Clearwater River.
According to the Idaho County Sheriff’s Office, the two were in a situation where they could not continue any farther because of darkness, loss of trail and the riverbank being too steep to navigate in the dark.
Deputies, along with volunteers with the Grangeville Mountain Rescue, Syringa General Hospital ambulance and a physician deployed a raft and successfully navigated across the river to retrieve the hikers one at a time. Both were reportedly uninjured and safely returned to their vehicle. (Lewiston Tribune, Idaho County Sheriff’s Office) ....

State record steelhead landed from South Fork of the Clearwater River

Congratulations to Scott Turner of Boise, Idaho on setting a new catch-and-release state record for steelhead. Scott landed the monster sea-going trout on April 11 on the South Fork Clearwater. The fish measured 39.25 inches long – beating Samuel Brumbaugh’s previously held record by 1.25 inches.
As an avid angler, Turner has set multiple other records on a variety of species. This spring, he was on a quest to reclaim the top steelhead spot after his previous 2017 record had been broken. ....
