More In-Person Class Time Coming To CMS As Early As Next Week

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg school board will vote Tuesday on plans to provide students more in-person class time, with changes starting as early as next week.
The vote comes as state health and education officials are urging the fullest possible return to in-person classes. CMS elementary and K-8 schools currently use a Plan B rotation, with students split into two groups that attend in-person two days a week and learn remotely for three days.
School board Vice Chair Thelma Byers-Bailey said the preliminary plan calls for moving those schools to Plan A, with everyone attending four days a week. ....

CMS Board Votes To Keep Pre-K And Special Ed Students Out Of Schools For Two Weeks After Holiday Break

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg school board voted 8-1 Tuesday to keep all students out of classrooms until Jan. 19 including prekindergarteners and special education students who had been scheduled to return in person on Jan. 5.
Superintendent Earnest Winston cited rising COVID-19 numbers in Mecklenburg County and a concern that things could get worse after holiday gatherings. The two-week return to remote instruction for all students is designed to provide time to see whether numbers rise.
Based on our experience in the weeks following Thanksgiving, we believe the best course of action during the first two weeks following winter break is to have all our students learn in a remote setting, Winston told the board. ....

A public school system in Charlotte, North Carolina, recently announced plans to rename its academic center as some have accused the current name of promoting white supremacists.
But in its zeal to remove racists from its ranks, it has unfairly maligned a reluctant Confederate general who later spent his life advocating for inclusion of African-Americans.
