Cabell sheriff paints picture of opioid crisis through testimony

CHARLESTON – At the landmark federal opioid trial, Cabell County Sherriff Chuck Zerkle testified being directly involved in Huntington, once deemed “epicenter of the opioid crisis,” has evolved.
During his testimony May 27, Zerkle said he wanted to make a difference and to help combat issues he believes are harming the community.
“One of the reasons I ran for sheriff was I felt I could make a difference in our community,” said Zerkle, who has been a Cabell County resident since 1985 working various positions in law enforcement and private industry.

McKesson warned customers nearing threshold limits

CHARLESTON – Attorneys representing Cabell County and the City of Huntington probed a McKesson sales representative on warning customers of nearing threshold limits, pushing increases and pushing sales – including controlled substances.
Huntington and Cabell County sued the nation s three largest pharmaceutical distribution companies – AmerisourceBergen, Cardinal Health and McKesson – in 2017 seeking to hold the companies accountable for their alleged part in the opioid epidemic by sending more than 540,000 opioids each month to independent and chain pharmacies – excluding hospitals and/or hospital pharmacies – located in Cabell County.

With opioid trial three weeks away, sides work through final motions, logistics

CHARLESTON â A Charleston federal judge expects a trial courtroom will be limited to attorneys, witnesses and court officials as Huntington, Cabell County and opioid distributors inch toward a May trial date.
Lawsuits on behalf of the municipalities were filed in 2017 against AmerisourceBergen Corp., McKesson and Cardinal Health â the âBig Threeâ drug distributors â which are accused of being a public nuisance by blindly pumping pain pills into Appalachia, thus fueling opioid and later heroin addiction.
The lawsuits argue the distributors breached their duty to monitor, detect, investigate, refuse and report suspicious orders of prescription opiates.
The sides met for a virtual pretrial hearing Wednesday to debate outstanding motions, at which time Judge David A. Faber also discussed logistics for the trial, which is set to start May 3. ....
