Young Boy Digging For Worms Uncovers Ancient Fossil

A 6-year-old boy was out in his yard in Walsall, England, digging for worms when he instead found a very ancient fossil. Siddak Singh Jhamat, whose nickname is Sid, was outside in his family’s garden using a fossil-hunting kit that he received for Christmas and his gift certainly paid off with his new discovery.
After making the discovery, Sid showed the fossil to his father who was then able to identify it as being a horn coral based on information he gathered from a fossil group on Facebook. Using the information he found, he estimates that the fossil dates back between 251 and 488 million years ago during the Paleozoic Era. ....

Dinosaur fossil found sitting on eggs in a nest reveals well-developed parental care
A multinational team recently announced a fossil dinosaur discovery in China that provides new evidence of advanced parental care among at least one group of the earth’s once dominant vertebrate animals. The fossil, dating to 70 million years ago, during the Cretaceous Period, which ended with the mass dinosaur extinction, consists of the partially preserved remains of an oviraptorosaur, a feathered, theropod dinosaur lineage tangentially related to those that eventually gave rise to modern birds.
Of especial interest is that this animal appears to have been sitting on a brood of at least two dozen eggs. Examination of the embryos preserved in at least seven of the eggs confirmed that they belong to the same group as the adult, strongly implying that the latter was a parent sitting on a nest incubating its offspring. ....

In a new revelation, scientists have discovered a fossil of an oviraptorosaur which is a type of bird-like theropod dinosaur usually found sitting on the top of nests that contain eggs. According to the reports by Phys.org, the species belongs to the Cretaceous Period, which is also the third and final time period of the Mesozoic Era that extended from 145 to 66 million years ago. The new specimen, which is 70 million years old, was recovered from uppermost Cretaceous-aged rocks in Ganzhou City in China’s Jiangxi Province. ....
