Nationals MP Barnaby Joyce says if the Labor Party of Victoria cannot manage the state then they should "get out of the way" and give it to someone who can.

The remarks come after the state government in Victoria imposed a state-wide lockdown - including regional Victoria.

"When you look at the perverse reasoning behind this, that apparently a colonial relic - the state border - is going to determine whether a virus, which is not on one area on a side of an arbitrary line, can get to another area where it doesn't exist as well," he said.

"This is what is driving businesses to the wall, it is driving businesses into the ground.

"And the only reply we get from the Victorian Labor Party is they scream at Canberra 'you pay for it' - we pay for their stuff up.

"If the Labor Party of Victoria can't manage the state get out of the way and give it to someone who can."
