Indiana passes 50% vaccination mark
INDIANAPOLIS — Just over half of Hoosiers age 12 and older are now fully vaccinated against COVID-19, but northeast Indiana remains behind the curve.
As of Friday, 2.89 million Hoosiers have completed either a two-dose Pfizer of Moderna vaccine or received a single-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine, putting the state at 50.66% of its eligible population of just over 5.7 million fully vaccinated.
Northeast Indiana, by comparison, still lags the state by a fair margin. The four-county area as a whole is only 36.25% vaccinated, although that regional average is dragged down by the state-worst LaGrange County and Noble County, which is tied for 14th-worst of Indiana’s 92 counties. ....

Butler EDC recommends tax abatement

BUTLER — With a 3-0 vote, Butler’s Economic Development Commission Friday recommended that Therma-Tru be granted 10-year tax abatements for a planned $43.6 million expansion of its facility at 601 R.E. Jones Road.
The recommendation now goes to Butler’s City Council, which will consider the request at its meeting Monday.
The three-member EDC board — Jay Jacobs, Dawn Mason and president Rick Walters — all voted in favor of the abatements.
Therma-Tru plans to build a 23,000-square-foot addition to its facility at the south end of Butler to house new manufacturing equipment, including six new presses. The company also plans to hire 53 people. ....

County continues to see business growth

AUBURN — Economic growth continues to be on the upswing in DeKalb County and the state despite the pandemic’s persistence to remain present.
Companies big and small, industrial and startup, continue to expand as they fight the battle to find the needed workforce to fill their needs. DeKalb County saw a 3.3% unemployment rate as of June 30. That figure is slightly lower than the state’s 4% unemployment rate.

Plan commission gives trails plan favorable recommendation

AUBURN — The DeKalb County Plan Commission Wednesday voted to send a favorable recommendation to the DeKalb County Commissioners on a new DeKalb County Trails Plan.
The plan will be used to guide future planning and development of trails in unincorporated DeKalb County with connections to neighboring counties and municipalities and their existing trails networks.
Having an official, adopted plan will make the county eligible to apply for state and federal grants to develop the trails, the plan commission heard.
The county commissioners will consider the plan July 19 at 9:30 a.m.
The development of a trails plan began in 2019 with a meeting of the non-profit DeKalb County Trails Inc., which worked on it with the Auburn/Waterloo Trail Committee. Due to COVID-19, the plan did not move forward for a period of time, said Chris Gaumer, the county’s zoning administrator and director of development services. ....
