The Fort Payne City Council held a brief meeting on Tuesday with a public hearing to receive public comments on a proposed re-zoning of property followed by a long work session touching on several frequent topics. The Council gave second reading to and approved an ordinance establishing a speed limit on Echols Drive. They discussed installing windows from Kudzu Millworks on the front of the small building where Fort Payne Main Street is re-locating to make it more energy efficient and will revisit the issue with price estimates. At the May 18 Fort Payne City Council meeting, Council member John Smith suggested the city should give first responders a one-time bonus and proposed that the city name a street leading into the new school after the superintendent who managed its construction. The city attorney also gave an update on efforts to demolish the old DeKalb General Hospital. Iâd like to take this first payment and reward them.â ....

Fire Chief Ron Saferite said the nature of fire departments nationwide has trended toward providing emergency medical treatment rather than simply putting out fires, so his crews are well trained to offer this service. He said they often wait at the scene with patients and their families until DeKalb Ambulance Service arrives. âThis is nothing against the ambulance service we presently have,â Saferite said. âThis is something we feel like is going to help the citizens of our town to receive quicker service. We usually beat [DAS] to the scene by five to seven minutes and sometimes that can be life-saving. Theyâve been known to take 20 to 30 minutes to get to the scene before they can transport the patient. When ....
