The National Space Organization’s (NSPO) cubesat program has shed light on a nascent industry of small satellite launch service suppliers in Taiwan.
With the global space industry shifting its focus to smaller satellites, many domestic manufacturers supplying satellite or communications components have become part of the global supply chain, while launch services are newer areas for Taiwan.
The NSPO in 2017 commissioned three university teams to make cubesats and three companies to facilitate their launches as part of the government’s effort to foster a “new space” industry. ....

SpaceX launch of two Taiwanese cubesats delayed

Two cubesats developed by Taiwanese researchers were scheduled to be launched by Space Exploration Technologies Corp’s (SpaceX) Falcon 9 rocket from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida between 22:24pm and 23:24pm last night.
However, SpaceX at 10:37pm tweeted that due to unfavorable weather, it was delaying the launch until tonight.
The Transporter-1 mission is the first to be part of the company’s SmallSat Rideshare Program, according to the SpaceX Web site.
“On board this launch are 133 commercial and government spacecraft (including cubesats, microsats, and orbital transfer vehicles) and 10 Starlink satellites the most spacecraft ever deployed on a single mission,” the Web site said. ....

Ministry planning low-orbit satellite launch in 2025

Taiwan’s first low-orbit communications satellite would be launched by 2025, and the government has budgeted NT$4 billion (US$140.62 million) for its development, Minister of Science and Technology Wu Tsung-tsong (吳政忠) said yesterday.
The Beyond 5G communications satellite would be jointly developed by the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Wu told a news conference in Taipei.
The program seeks to help local companies make inroads into the emerging low-orbit satellite communications industry, led by US rocket supplier SpaceX’s Starlink program, he said.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) Prosecutors on Tuesday (Dec. 29) asked a court to be lenient to the owner of an unregistered helicopter caught landing in a residential area in the New Taipei City district of Tamsui last September, as he had confessed and donated the aircraft to National Formosa University.
The incident came to light as a video posted online showed the private Robinson R-22 helicopter landing near a densely populated part of Tamsui, close to apartment buildings, trees, and power lines. With the rotor blades still whirring, a man jumped into the aircraft just before it took off again. ....

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) A star basketball player from the UBA
(University Basketball Association) and his girlfriend perished in a car accident on Sunday (Dec. 20) in southern Taiwan.
On Sunday evening, a 23-year-old basketball team captain and recent graduate from the Department of Automation Engineering from National Formosa University surnamed Chen (陳) and his girlfriend, surnamed Tsai (蔡), who is a junior at the university, suffered fatal injuries when they were involved in a car accident. According to an initial investigation, it is believed that the deadly accident occurred when Chen attempted to make an illegal direct left turn on his scooter and was struck from behind by a car. ....
