With the enactment of a new, stricter, law in Nepal against the use of acid in attacks, perpetrators have now shifted to using hot oil. Although injuries from such attacks are often first-degree burns compared to acid attacks (which result in third-degree burns), weaker laws and little support from the government make the victims of such attacks vulnerable. Criminals resort to such methods knowing stricter punishment lies with the use of acid – and not with oil. ....

KATHMANDU: There is hardly a better way to promote human rights in Nepal than celebrating Muskan Khatun for being one of the winners of the prestigious International Women of Courage (IWOC) Award, released on International Women’s Day by the government of the United States of America.
As an acid attack survivor, Khatun, despite her young age, turned herself into a courageous advocate. Her work, together with that of many of her peers, victims themselves, was instrumental in pressing the government of Nepal to enact tougher regulations against the perpetrators of acid and burn violence. ....
