Every year, we take time to celebrate School Principals’ Day on May 1 and National Teacher Appreciation Day on May 4. The Appreciation Day for teachers has now turned into National Teacher Appreciation Week, and this year was celebrated May 2-8.
Back in the early 1950s, the idea of honoring our teachers originally came from Eleanor Roosevelt, former first lady of the United States and wife of President Franklin Roosevelt. In 1980, the idea took on increased publicity and grew from that time into a rather significant day and week, when we routinely and officially give kudos to these people who have dedicated their lives to educating our young people.   ....

Great teachers have a passion for their subject matter, and communicating that passion stays with students for decades.
My friend Marco’s high school forensics teacher is a good example. He emailed: “Bonnie Miller pushed us out of our comfort zones, inspired us to think creatively, write fast and fearlessly, and speak extemporaneously in events ranging from SPAR [spontaneous argumentation] to impromptu speaking – five minutes to prepare a five-minute talk on a random topic that we picked from a hat.”

Ashland School Board accepts grant money for COVID expenses
May 12, 2021ASHLAND At their May 4 meeting, the Ashland School Board accepted grant money for Coronavirus expenses, discussed future school improvements to be funded by such grants, and approved a Student Council proposal for an outdoor classroom, the eighth grade class trip and the calendar for the next school year. They also learned of school activities.
The School Board held a public hearing on accepting unanticipated grant money from the second round of the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief program, also known as ESSER II, for expenses due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The ESSER II allocation to the Ashland School District is $270,983.75. Part of that sum will go to the local Supervisory Union to cover the associated administrative costs. The Board voted unanimously to accept the grant. Superintendent Mary Moriarty also discussed the next grant round ESSER III, money which has yet to be rele ....

COMMENTARY: There's one gift most teachers really appreciate

WHAT DO teachers really appreciate for a “thank you” at the end of the year? While teachers love gifts, there’s something else they really like as well, perhaps even more than anything you can buy.
Back in 1953, former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt lobbied Congress to create a National Teacher Appreciation Day. In 1984, the National Parent Teacher Association moved it from March to May, and gave teachers a well-deserved week of appreciation.
There are plenty of online sites where you can buy a teacher a gift. And don’t forget to buy local, too!
But here’s something teachers really, really love: when their students bring their “A” game in the classroom and on assignments. ....
