Govt caves in on salaries - Zimbabwe Situation

Govt caves in on salaries
BY MIRIAM MANGWAYA
PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government has bowed to pressure and agreed to consider another adjustment on civil servants’ salaries after teachers threatened a full-blown strike last week as their employer moved to effect a no-work-no-salary policy.
Last Thursday, Public Service minister Paul Mavima confirmed the development in Senate, saying government was considering another “slight adjustment” to the “staggered 70%” wage offer tabled last month, which civil servants have rejected.
He, however, insisted that the salaries would be in local currency as government had no capacity to pay United States dollar-indexed salaries.
“With regard to salaries, government is working out to ensure that workers are motivated properly, but the workers should also appreciate efforts that are being made by government. According to our revenue at the moment, it is not possible for us to go beyond what we have already o ....

DURBAN - MORE than 1 000 schools across KwaZulu-Natal are operating without school principals and other senior managers who are critical for the proper functioning of educational institutions.
A report on vacancies by the provincial Department of Education shows that across all districts there are 1 082 vacancies for principals, 283 for deputy principals and 617 for heads of department, bringing the total to 1 982 vacancies. The figures ware revealed by the provincial department yesterday.
The revelation has angered opposition parties who argued that the situation places pressure on already overburdened teachers while compromising the quality of education. A school principal said having a permanently appointed principal was critical to the functioning of a school, he said a full-time appointee commanded the respect of the staff and was able to make decisions that an acting principal could ....

Durban - FRUSTRATED unemployed education graduates have reached out to teacher unions in a bid to get answers on “the fickle app” for unemployed qualified teachers launched by the provincial Department of Education.
Last week, the Daily News reported that the KZN Qualified Educators App had allegedly not been working for some time, however the department denied this saying the problems were resolved.
A group of unemployed education graduates met with the South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) on Monday over frustration regarding the app.
Provincial secretary Nomarashiya Caluza said since schools opened in January they have been fighting and raising the issue of this app with the department. The app, launched in February last year, registers users as employers or applicants. Applicants register using their personal details, including their qualifications and a ....

Rural school children still left in the pits as thousands return to school

Rural school children still left in the pits as thousands return to school
By Staff Reporter
SILINDILE NYATHIKAZI
Durban - THE degrading state of toilets, taps running dry, lack of scholar transport, dilapidated classrooms, and lack of food for pupils in rural areas overshadowed the “state of readiness” announced by the Department of Basic Education on Sunday.
This was according to teacher unions in the province, who conducted oversight visits, as thousands of pupils returned to school on Monday.
“We visited four schools in the deep rural parts of KwaZulu-Natal because we know these are the schools really suffering and what we saw was beyond shocking. We saw pit toilets that pupils fall into, so they relieve themselves outside instead. There’s no water so they can’t cook, there were no mobile classrooms as promised, some children could not get to school because there was no transport and some pupils were wearing torn masks that they wer ....
