The recycled rides program is a national initiative hosted locally by Washburn Tech each year. Recipients are chosen by a selection committee made up of Washburn Tech students and facilitated by United Way of Greater Topeka leaders. ....

When roles shifted, and her vehicle was destroyed by fire and she couldnât survive in a rural area without transportation, others stepped up to help her.
The 46-year-old recently received the keys to a refurbished 2015 Ford Fusion, a burgundy four-door sedan thatâs allowed her to get from her Caroline County home to the grocery store, laundromat and doctorâs office. Two families have wheels they couldn’t otherwise afford, thanks to a partnership of local entities.
Two single mothers, Johnise Peña of Rio Rancho and Yolanda Avila of Albuquerque, received restored cars Wednesday at the Car Crafters shop on Veranda Drive.
“Oh, my gosh. It’s beyond amazing,” Avila said of getting her car. “It’s a dream come true, I should say.” ....
