Frontiers | An Evaluation of Strong-Motion Parameters at the S-net Ocean-Bottom Seismograph Sites Near the Kanto Basin for Earthquake Early Warning

We analyzed strong-motion records at the ground and borehole in and around the Kanto Basin and the seafloor in the Japan Trench area from three nearby offshore earthquakes of similar magnitudes (Mw 5.8–5.9). The seafloor strong-motion records were obtained from S-net, which was established to enhance tsunami and earthquake early warnings after the 2011 great Tohoku-oki earthquake disaster. The borehole records were obtained from MeSO-net, a dense network of seismometers installed at a depth of 20 m in the Tokyo metropolitan area. The ground records were obtained from the K-NET and KiK-net networks, established after the 1995 great Hanshin-Awaji earthquake disaster. The MeSO-net and S-net stations record the shakings continuously, while the K-NET and KiK-net records are based on triggering thresholds. Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs – DOST) launched a mobile application that can assess the vulnerability of houses to strong earthquakes.
“Earthquakes per se do not kill people, building collapses do,” DOST Undersecretary
Renato Solidum Jr. said.
Called “How Safe Is My House?,” this application provides a simple and easy-to-use tool for owners and occupants of residential houses and other one to two storey concrete hollow block houses.
Users will have to answer 12 questions on the app and these are:
Who built or designed my house?
How old is my house? ....

Three major earthquakes have struck offshore Sendai and Fukushima, Japan, in the past three months. The first two, both magnitude-7.1, occurred on February 13 and March 20. The latest, a magnitude-6.9, occurred on May 1. The three quakes struck within 60 miles (100 kilometers) of each other and were strong enough to rattle major population centers of northern Honshu, Japan’s main island. These were just a few of the thousands of quakes that have struck the region in the last decade since the Great Tohoku Earthquake. ....

CALOOCAN CITY, April 19 (PIA) A self-assessment app promoting the general safety of concrete houses during strong earthquakes is now available for Android users.
The Department of Science and Technology–Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) has released the How Safe Is My House? Self-check for Earthquake Safety of Concrete Hollow Block (CHB) Houses in the Philippines mobile application for Android users.
The app provides a simple and easy-to-use tool for owners and occupants of residential houses and other 1-2-storey CHB buildings.
By answering 12 questions, Android users can evaluate the safety of their CHB houses, and understand its likely vulnerability to a strong earthquake. The result determines if the structure is safe and presumably built according to standard construction procedures. If not, it may recommend further professional consultations and necessary structural strengthening. ....
