Members of the National Waste and Recycling Industry Council (NWRIC) met this week in Canberra with a full agenda including updates from state affiliates, Assistant Minister for Waste Reduction the Hon. Trevor Evans MP and representatives from the Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment.
NWRIC CEO Rose Read said it was a productive meeting with discussion of several government programs, policy matters, as well as NWRIC’s current project on recovered material specifications.

2021-22 Federal Budget – Organics, Food Waste and Product Stewardship
The waste and resource recovery sector will benefit from new funding announced in this week’s federal budget for 2021-22.
National Waste and Recycling Industry Council (NWRIC) CEO Rose Read said it was pleasing to see new funding announced for several initiatives.
“It was good to see new funding being committed to help divert organic food from landfill and importantly, put it back into agricultural soils.
“This is a key step to addressing the National Waste Policy Action Plan target of halving the amount of organic waste being sent to landfill and reaching the 80% resource recovery rate. ....

Australia: Ban on Single-Use Plastic Products Enacted in Australian Capital Territory
(May 10, 2021) On April 8, 2021, the Plastic Reduction Act 2021 (ACT) was notified in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Legislation Register, with the relevant bill having been passed by the ACT Legislative Assembly on March 31, 2021. According to the revised explanatory statement for the bill, the legislation gives effect to a phase-out of single-use plastic agreed to in the Parliamentary and Governing Agreement between the Labor Party and the Greens. The legislation
aims to reduce the use of plastic in the ACT, particularly single-use plastic, by prohibiting the supply of identified single-use plastic items. These create significant issues for the ACT’s environment (e.g. through litter) and waste management and resource recovery sector (e.g. ending up in landfill or becoming contamination in the ACT Materials Recovery Facility). Aldi launches a brand new 'Market Buy' in the fresh food section


Aldi Australia has launched a new Market Buy range featuring seasonal fruits and vegetables with minor imperfections.
The range was introduced in bid to assist farmers and is part of Aldi s commitment to send zero food waste into landfill by 2025.
The Market Buy range empowers farmers to sell more of their crops and avoid edible produce from going to waste, Aldi said in a statement.

Aldi has announced plans to send zero waste to landfill by 2025 and the move could mean additions to its popular Special Buys.
The discount supermarket will investigate closing the loop, such as sending broken pallets to be chipped into garden mulch and then sold as a Special Buy.
But to reach the zero milestone, Aldi will first focus on food with a goal to send zero food waste to landfill by 2023.
It will include an expansion to its food rescue program to reuse out of date goods for animals and when the food is deemed not suitable for human consumption. ....
