The Covid-19 pandemic that has been impacting Sri Lanka for the past one and a half years has had wide ranging economic and social repercussions for people from all walks of life from the loss of livelihood and education to domestic violence and child abuse. Women and children have been disproportionately affected on multiple fronts.
In July alone, four cases of extreme violence against children were reported: a 13 year old girl from Nawalapitiya had been allegedly sexually abused by her father since the age of seven; a 15 year old girl was subjected to sex trafficking; two children of 12 and 14 were allegedly abused by their father resulting in pregnancy; and a 16 year old girl who was illegally employed at the residence of MP Rishad Bathiudeen died of burn injuries. ....

Demonstrations have been held all over Sri Lanka after a 16-year-old girl died while being treated for serious burns in a case that has highlighted the abuse and slavery of children and women in the island nation.
Ruwani Princy, a 54-year-old Tamil former tea worker from Talawakelle, said preliminary investigations revealed that the girl had been taken to capital Colombo and used as a domestic worker. ....

Days after the death of a 16-year-old girl who was employed as domestic help by a politician, Sri Lanka is set to toughen its child labour regulations by raising the minimum age for employment to 18 years in order to prevent child exploitation.
A Cabinet proposal to raise the minimum age to 18 is being produced, according to Piyal Nishantha, the state minister of women and child development. The Ministry of Labor has also agreed to increase the list of jobs that are considered harmful to children aged 16 to 18. ....
