Awareness campaign launched on human trafficking crimes

Muscat: The National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking (NCCHT) launched its second awareness campaign titled Insan , the Arabic word for human being, on Monday.
Through the campaign, NCCHT seeks to promote and spread awareness among various segments of society about human trafficking crimes, the means to detect them and ways to support governmental efforts to deal with these cases.
The ‘Insan’ campaign, will run over a period of three months, starting from March 1, 2021 until May 31, 2021. It will include various messages in several languages, targeted at different segments of society, including citizens and expatriates. ....

“Oman believes in the necessity of its role to support global efforts in combating human trafficking, which is a danger to society,” said His Excellency Nasr bin Khamis Al Sawa’ai, Oman’s Prosecutor General, and the vice chairman of the NCCHT.
Muscat: Forming rapid response teams to investigate cases of human trafficking, providing shelter to victims of trafficking, creating a high-level national plan to combat such illegal activities, and running awareness campaigns to inform people of the dangers of such actions are among the ways in which Oman has pledged to combat human trafficking. ....

Muscat: The Oman Human Rights Commission (OHRC), has dealt with 5 reports on physical safety cases in the Sultanate in 2020.
The OHRC s annual report said: Violence and physical abuse are serious violations of human rights. When OHRC detects a report of this kind, it verifies the facts of the matter and listens to all parties.
OHRC has received a report on April 16, 2020 about an Omani girl’s allegation that she was a victim of physical and verbal abuse by her family. The girl also alleged that the family was depriving her from pursuing university education and restricting her freedom. The Public Prosecution Department was approached and the problem was resolved. The girl is now pursuing her university education and enjoying her full rights. ....

Increased cooperation between IOM and the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking in Qatar

Doha – In line with the recent laws and reforms that the State of Qatar has put in place to improve labour migration governance for temporary contractual workers, an online meeting was held between the International Organization for Migration (IOM)’s mission in Qatar and the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking on 18 December, International Migrants Day. 
According to recently published government statistics, there were over 2 million migrant workers in Qatar in 2020.  
Last August, the State of Qatar announced new measures effectively dismantling the sponsorship system, enacting new laws to remove the No-Objection Certificate (NOC) that, previously, workers were required to obtain from an employer if they wished to change jobs. Under the new law, workers are allowed to change employers freely under certain conditions.   ....
