Aleida Garcia said she had a familiar “pins and needles” feeling Tuesday afternoon while awaiting the verdict in the murder trial of former police officer Derek Chauvin. It was similar to what she experienced while sitting in a courtroom waiting for the verdict of the man who killed her son in Philadelphia.
“When I heard the [Chauvin] verdict, I felt the same way, the sense that, you know, there is when you get justice for someone you love or someone we care about, it is a sort of a victory,” said Garcia. “But in a lot of ways, it’s a hollow victory because at some point, you know, you realize that the person isn’t going to come back.” ....

PHILADELPHIA (KYW) We’re hearing from the mother of a 15-year-old boy who was shot and killed in what appears to be a random act of violence. Antonio Walker Jr. was gunned down on the 5200 block of Pentridge Street last night in Southwest Philadelphia.

JOHN L. MICEK: With gun violence on the rise, one mom fights back

In January 2015, Alex Rojas Garcia, a student at Temple University, was shot 15 times and left for dead on a cold and lonely street in Philadelphia.
In the six years since, his mother, Aleida Garcia, has taken her tragedy and turned it into fuel for a crusade to fight the scourge of gun violence in her hometown. Alex’s wasn’t the first gun death in Philadelphia, and it won’t be the last. But every victim, and every survivor has a story to tell.
“For the past six years, I have immersed myself in all aspects of gun violence prevention and response,” Garcia, the co-founder and president of the Philadelphia-based National Homicide Justice Alliance said. “I’ve told my story countless times, but if it will save lives, I will tell it again and again.” ....
