ALL primary schools in London will close for new term


A teaching union has called for all schools across the country to be closed for the start of the new term after the government U-turned on its decision to keep some primaries in London open despite rising Covid cases.
The government bowed to protests, legal pressure and scientific advice on New Year s Day after it initially omitted a number of the capital s boroughs from the forced closures.
Dr Mary Bousted, joint general secretary of the National Education Union, said the u-turn was needed but said it was perplexing it had got to this stage.
She questioned why the same restrictions are not being rolled out across the rest of the country and said the way the devolved powers had dealt with the mutant virus in schools had led to less chaos. ....

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has confirmed the closures will take place, just two days after the Government said only those in 22 of London s 32 boroughs would be affected. Gavin Williamson has been forced into another humiliating policy reversal after the government bowed to pressure and agreed to keep all Londonprimary schools closed for the start of the new term.  
The education secretary has confirmed a blanket approach to schools after announcing just days ago that only a select number would remain closed after the Christmas holidays.
Labour said the education secretary s incompetent handling of the return of schools had caused huge stress to pupils, parents and staff, amid calls for more clarity about the criteria for reopening. ....

The UK’s largest teaching union has called for all schools in England to remain closed for two further weeks at the end of the Christmas break after a government U-turn which means all primaries in London will be shut next week.
The call from the National Education Union came after the education secretary, Gavin Williamson, reversed his decision that primary schools in some parts of London should open on Monday.
The government bowed to protests and legal pressure from the capital’s local authorities. Williamson said the decision had been a last resort. ....
