• It can only complement commercial farming, says don
Revving up food production amid widespread insecurity in almost all parts of the country has underscored the need to improvise and maximise available spaces at home in villages, towns and cities for backyard farming.

Apart from vegetables, agricultural scientists said various food crops, such as pulses, grains, roots and tubers, poultry and aquaculture could be done either at commercial or subsistence level. ....

By Peter Duru, Makurdi
The National Association of Yam Farmers, Processors and Marketers have decried cases of illegal levies and multiple taxation in Benue markets warning that the development is scaring away genuine business men and potential investors from the state.
The association offered to collaborate with Benue Internal Revenue Service, BIRS, to check the trend.
National President of the association, Prof. Simon Irtwange who made this known yesterday in Makurdi shortly after the inauguration of a new leadership for the Benue state chapter of the association in Makurdi said though some of the levies were allowed for the purpose peace they were also adversely affecting businesses in the markets. ....

Why we opposed blockade of foodstuff to South — Benue farmers

Why we opposed blockade of foodstuff to South Benue farmers
On
When Benue farmers were killed in thousands nobody called for blockade
WHEN last Thursday the Amalgamated Union of Foodstuff and Cattle Dealers Association issued a strike notice directing its members to stop hauling foodstuff and livestock to the Southern states of the country until a compensation of N475billion was paid to the members for losses incurred due to the persistent herders crisis, many dismissed the development with a wave of the hand.
Regrettably the union later made good its threat by stopping the supply of foodstuff and livestock to the Southern part of the country, thereby creating artificial scarcity of such products leading to sudden surge in prices of the items. Interestingly, shortly after the strike notice was issued, many had expected farmers in Benue State, known as the Food Basket of the Nation, to join forces with their counterparts in the far North to enforce the blockade ....

Taraba Yam Market comes alive as Tiv/Jukun crisis ebbs
On
By Femi Bolaji
JALINGO FOR over one year, the Wukari Yam Market has been left desolate. The ever-bubbling market became a shadow of itself on account of the feud which pitched the Tiv against the Jukun in Taraba South spreading to its domain.
Wukari Town, in the Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State where the Yam Market is situated, was one of the flashpoints of the ethnic feud that lasted over a year.
Lives and properties were lost to the bloody conflict, sending jitters to both buyers and sellers who used to flood the multi-million-naira Yam market that was once the pride of not only Taraba but the entire country. ....
