Kenya’s Parliamentary Budget Office (PBO) has advised the National Treasury to defer projects by one year even as Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury Ukur Yatani prepares to table a spending plan for Ksh3 trillion ($27.52 billion) in the 2021/22 fiscal year amid growing pressure to control public expenditure, reduce borrowing and put off new projects to save a struggling economy.
PBO wants Treasury to rationalise recurrent spending as much as possible and freeze nominal expenditure growth for all spending categories particularly growth supportive sectors such as energy and infrastructure.
The MPs have also demanded that infrastructure spending be limited to major road networks and that the government should reinforce the work-from-home option for public servants and encourage shift to online platforms for meetings to reduce demands on operations and maintenance. ....

The Federal Government on Saturday disbursed N20,000 special grants to 2,560 rural women in Kwara under the one-off scheme.
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajiya Sadiya Umar, who flagged off the disbursement in Ilorin.
She said over 150,000 poor rural women would benefit from the grants across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
“A total number of 2,560 beneficiaries are to benefit from the cash grants of N20,000 each to uplift the socio-economic status of the rural women in Kwara state,” Faruk said. ....

The Federal Government says there is no form of corruption and inefficiency in the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) Programme under the National Social Investment Programme.
Hajiya Sadiya Umar Farouq, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja said any contrary story against the programme was false.
Farouq explained that unpatriotic persons were trying to give the programme a bad name and image contrary to the reality on ground.
She said the programme was introduced by the Federal Government in 2016, in partnership with the World Bank to fortify social safety nets and establish a social protection system in Nigeria. ....
