In our world, the recent ‘sugar’ dispute between Dangote Industries Limited and The BUA Group is a modern-day reverberating saga of how this different form of hydra-headed monster, is being confronted and gallantly defeated by one of Nigeria’s very own indigenous Titans.
A monopoly, in any form, is truly a hydra-headed monster, which has a penchant for destroying the Nigerian dream and does not prognosticate well for the economy primarily. There are several facets that render a monopoly a hydra-headed monster, least of which is that it creates a market concentration that likely results in higher commodity prices than in a more competitive market. ....

Minister: Investment in sugar industry will provide jobs for youths

Minister of Industry, Trade Investment, Chief Niyi Adebayo, has reiterated commitment of the federal government to partner with private and public investors in the sugar industry to accelerate the nation’s economic growth.
Speaking at the official commissioning of the multi-billion Naira Nigeria Sugar Institute located in Jimba-Oja town in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State on Thursday, Chief Adebayo said the investment already made by the federal government and the private sector in the sugar industry was capable of creating thousands of jobs in the agriculture and manufacturing sectors.
He said, “The government therefore recognises the need to deepen the partnership with the private sector to drive access to skills development, research and development in a manner that promotes competition, productivity, profitability and sustainability in the sugar industry.” ....

The dues to the sugarcane farmer have accumulated to Rs. 25,000 crores or $3 billion in non-payment for their produce, as per a reply given to a question in Parliament in September of 2020

It is well known Indian economy has slowed down especially during the pandemic and its aftermath. The Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sector, which is believed to be the evergreen sector in Indian economy, is also reporting a slowdown. One of the primary reasons of the slowdown is the delayed payment of the farmer in the sugarcane industry. As per Department of Food Processing and Industry, Ministry of Consumer Affairs India is the second largest producer of sugar in the world, Brazil being the first. Also, we are the largest sugar consumer in the world, with its industrial annual output at approximately Rs.80,000 crores. ....
