Bangkok improves drainage system to reduce flooding during rainy season

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is working on improving the drainage system around electric train station construction sites, to reduce flooding during the rainy season.
Bangkok governor Aswin Kwanmuang has called on related departments to investigate and instruct operators at eight construction sites to improve the drainage systems, as well as to have water pumps ready.
The authorities have also checked the readiness of drainage tunnels and pumping stations in Bangkok’s 50 districts, while the water levels in canals have been reduced, pumps have been set up in flood-prone areas and sewers and canals dredged, to ensure efficient drainage. ....

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Royal Irrigation Department (RID) has disclosed that an early start to the rainy season in May is expected to be the heaviest in 30 years, according to the forecast of the Meteorological Department.
RID deputy director-general Dr Thaweesak Thanadechopol said this year’s rainfall would be higher than the 30-year average, and the RID has instructed every concerned agency to be prepared for the water situation, inspect the condition of reservoirs and irrigation buildings that are under the responsibility for availability to their full potential.
He confirmed that overall water management during the dry season of 2020-21 had gone in line with plan, with sufficient water supply until the end of this drought season, ensuring enough supply until the beginning of the rainy season. ....

BANGKOK (NNT) - Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwon has ordered state agencies to speed up developing groundwater resources and water gates to prevent saltwater intrusion amid predictions of severe drought.
He said the drought crises in the coming months will be similar to those of last year. The government will continue with plans to ensure there are sufficient water resources for household consumption and agriculture.
Gen Prawit said after the meeting of a subcommittee on water resource management that the most pressing concern is that state agencies must work faster to dig underground water wells in drought zones to feed orchards and plants which need less water to grow. ....

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Office of National Water Resources (ONWR) is now in the process of mitigating the drought in the northeastern region, with projects in place to improve water reservoir efficiency, and ensure the availability of clean water for all people.
The ONWR’s Secretary General Somkiat Prajamwong has inspected the ground water distribution center of Khok Sung Samphan Subdistrict Municipality in Khon Kaen province, following up on water shortage prevention and mitigation provisions, and expediting projects under the agencies responsible for promoting water security and sustainability.
This dry season, the ONWR plans to ensure that people in all locations have a supply of clean water available, with plans to build groundwater distribution centers along main roads across the country. ....
