Bangkok improves drainage system to reduce flooding during rainy season

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is working on improving the drainage system around electric train station construction sites, to reduce flooding during the rainy season.
Bangkok governor Aswin Kwanmuang has called on related departments to investigate and instruct operators at eight construction sites to improve the drainage systems, as well as to have water pumps ready.
The authorities have also checked the readiness of drainage tunnels and pumping stations in Bangkok’s 50 districts, while the water levels in canals have been reduced, pumps have been set up in flood-prone areas and sewers and canals dredged, to ensure efficient drainage. ....

The Mekong River s depth in Chiang Rai s Chiang Saen district is expected to drop by about 1.3 metres today, as a dam in China s Yunnan province reduced its discharge rate last week, a river monitor warned.
According to a warning on Saturday by the Mekong Dam Monitor, an online Mekong River monitoring network, communities downstream of the Jinghong dam should prepare for a sharp dip in water levels on Monday of up to 1.3 metres.
The National Water Command Centre (NWCC) also issued a warning to provinces along the Mekong River to brace for sharp drops in water levels, as the dam s operator slashed its discharge rate to 1,854 cubic metres (m³) per second, from 2,525m³, on Friday and Saturday. ....

BANGKOK (Reuters) - China has notified downstream neighbours it is holding back the Mekong River flow at a hydropower dam on the waterway’s upper reaches for 20 days, as part of a new data-sharing pact, the Mekong River Commission (MRC) and Thailand said on Wednesday.

BANGKOK China has notified downstream neighbors it is holding back the Mekong River flow at a hydropower dam on the waterway’s upper reaches for 20 days, as part of a new data-sharing pact, the Mekong River Commission (MRC) and Thailand said on Wednesday.
The statements came a day after a new U.S.-backed monitoring system said China had failed to notify downstream countries of water restrictions that started on Dec. 31.
China agreed last October to share water data with the MRC, an advisory body to Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam that had long sought the information for planning. ....
