Throughout the school day on Monday, Tori Mueller, Treatment Director at Sioux Trails Mental Health Center, spoke with St. James Middle/Senior High School students on mental health, depression, anxiety, self-harm, and teen suicide.
Mueller was a guest on one of the Teen Talk podcast episodes conducted by St. James students. Mueller s familiarity with St. James her ability to connect with students was a large part of the reason why St. James Middle/High School Principal Karla Beck chose her to lead the presentations. ....

SHAWNEE, Kan. â A Shawnee brewery is hoping to break the stigma surrounding mental health.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Transport Brewery in Shawnee will be selling an Indian Pale Ale (IPA) called Things We Don t Say for the month of May. Part of the proceeds will go to the local nonprofit Carl s House.
Carl s Cause was started by a local family that lost their son, Carl Specht in 2017 to suicide. He had struggled with mental illness. Now, his family is trying to change the future of mental health. ....

Report: Tallahassee suicides increased nearly 70 percent in 2019-20

The number of suicides in Tallahassee increased 68% from 2019 to 2020, according to preliminary figures from the Florida Department of Health s Bureau of Vital Statistics.
Local mental health experts say that while the pandemic may seem like the primary factor in the increasing local suicide total, it s too early to understand all of its far-reaching effects.
There were 19 suicides in 2019 and 32 in 2020, according to the state. This is the first time the number of annual suicides crossed 30 in nearly a decade. The increase also contradicts the trend of decline in statewide and national suicide statistics.
The number of U.S. suicides reduced by 6% in 2020, which is the largest decline in at least four decades, according to The Associated Press. ....
