We mark World Environment Day under extremely difficult circumstances. The globe is reeling from the impacts of COVID-19, arguably one of the worst ever global pandemics, as well as the devastating impacts of climate change that continues to push the world as we know it to that dreaded point of no-return.
Even as we applaud the efforts by various stakeholders to respond to these twin challenges of our generation, we note that more efforts are required to surmount these dynamic problems and put the world on a path to recovery.
On this 30th anniversary year of our seminal 2020 Global Human Development Report entitled, “ The Next Frontier: Human Development and the Anthropocene, UNDP calls for ‘nothing short of a great transformation – in how we live, work and cooperate’ to change the path we are on. ....

War-time bomb safely removed in residential area in Quang Binh

A 227-kg bomb left from the war time was safely defused in a residential area in Bo Trach district, the central province of Quang Binh, the province’s military command said on March 2.
The 227-kg bomb left from the war time is found nearly 2m under the ground
The bomb was found nearly 2m under the ground by construction workers working on a road in Hoan Lao town at noon March 1.
Receiving alert from the workers, the military coordinated with local police to isolate the area and evacuate local residents.
The bomb was then defused and moved to a safe area for detonation. ....

Businesses are striving for greener and cleaner processes
Last November, the Ministry of Industry and Trade held a review conference in Danang on 10 years of implementation of the Cleaner Production Strategy for Industry to 2020, as well as the launch of a National Action Programme on Sustainable Production and Consumption for the 2021-2030 period.
The Cleaner Production Strategy was so strongly deployed at launch, that by 2015 it had achieved most of its objectives.
Cleaner production is widely applied in industries in order to increase the utilisation of efficiency of natural resources, material, and fuels; reduce emission and minimise the pollution acceleration rate; and protect and improve environmental quality, human health, and ensure the sustainable development. ....
