UK begins world's first alternate dosing Covid-19 vaccine trial

Health chiefs in the UK on Thursday began what they have described as a world-first clinical trial of patients who will receive different COVID-19 vaccines for their first or second dose, to detect its impact on immunity against coronavirus.
The study, backed by 7 million pound of government funding, will determine the effects of using different vaccines for the first and second dose for example, using Oxford University/AstraZeneca s vaccine for the first dose, followed by Pfizer/BioNTech s vaccine for the second.
It is being run by the National Immunisation Schedule Evaluation Consortium (NISEC) across eight National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) supported sites and also gather immunological evidence on different intervals between the first and second dose for a mixed-vaccine regimen against control groups when the same vaccine is used for both doses. ....

UK Launches 'World First' Trial Mixing Different COVID Vaccines for First, Second Doses – NBC Connecticut

It is hoped the study will help policymakers understand whether mixing different Covid vaccines could be a viable route to increase the flexibility of vaccination programs and whether it could even provide better protection.
If we do show that these vaccines can be used interchangeably in the same schedule this will greatly increase the flexibility of vaccine delivery, and could provide clues as to how to increase the breadth of protection against new virus strains, Matthew Snape, chief investigator on the trial and associate professor in Paediatrics and Vaccinology at the University of Oxford, said on Thursday.
The trial, which is formally known as the COVID-19 Heterologous Prime Boost study but has been dubbed the Com-Cov study, will recruit over 800 volunteers aged 50 and above in England to evaluate the four different combinations of prime and booster vaccination. ....

A new vaccine trial is underway in the U.K. to test whether mixing and matching different COVID-19 vaccines for the first and second doses is effective, BBC News reports.
The country is currently using the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine and Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, which both require two doses. For the study, run by the National Immunisation Schedule Evaluation Consortium, patients will get one dose of each.
The trial will involve 800 volunteers, age 50 or older, who haven t received a COVID-19 vaccine yet. They will receive their two vaccine doses as usual, four or 12 weeks apart, but one will be the Oxford shot and the other will be the Pfizer shot. If regulators approve other vaccines for use, they may be added to the study. ....
