It’s time to step up our efforts to encourage young people from underrepresented groups to consider a career in engineering, writes Engineering UK chief executive Dr Hilary Leevers.
Following hot on the heels of National Apprenticeships Week and International Women’s Day earlier this month, I’ve been thinking about what the engineering community can do to improve the balance between male and female apprentices across the UK and the urgency of doing so.
We know from our 2019 research report ‘Gender disparity in engineering’ that female under-representation in the engineering workforce is largely due to girls dropping out of educational pathways at every decision point, despite generally performing at least as well as boys in STEM subjects at school. ....

Most government departments missing apprenticeships target

MOST of the government’s departments are still missing its target for the provision of apprenticeships, four years after it was introduced, Labour revealed today during National Apprenticeships Week.
Eleven out of 17 departments which responded to a parliamentary question have failed to meet the 2.3 per cent target set in 2017. Seven of the 11 were failing to meet it in 2019.
The Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government, which employed the most apprentices in 2019, has since lagged behind, with apprentices accounting for just 1.4 per cent of current staff.
Apprentices make up less than 1 per cent of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport’s 900-strong workforce and the 3,500 staff in the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. ....

Lancaster charity apprentice aiming to boost colleagues' lockdown well-being with innovative 'health and happiness' project.

Holly Salisbury.
Holly Salisbury has been with CancerCare for around 12 months, joining as part of her Higher Apprenticeship at Level 4 in Business and Professional Administration from Lancaster and Morecambe College.
Over the last year, Holly, who lives in Heysham, has proved to be a great asset for the charity with her willingness to get involved and throw herself wholeheartedly into any challenge that comes her way.
Part of her course requires her to gain experience of event management, so Holly came up with a brilliant scheme to help boost workers mental wellbeing during the latest lockdown.
